The Mobipocket Format

The Mobipocket file format, also known as PRC file format is based on the Open eBook Publication format (EPUB) which is developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum.
The main application for reading the MobiPocket format is the MobiPocket Reader which is included in various portable devices like BlackBerry, Symbian Smartphones or eBook Readers like Amazon Kindle.
Since it is based on HTML it is a so-called "reflowable file format" and therefore optimized to display texts on screens. The page layout always adapts to the screen while reading the file similar to web pages (In contrast PDF files provide a fixed layout). Furthermore it is up to the user to choose the way the text is displayed. Parameters like line spacing, font family and font size can be changed while reading the document. MobiPocket eBooks can have a complex internal structure and also references. There is also a hidden layer with meta-information like author or publisher of the eBook.
The compression algorithm the Mobipocket format uses allows to display the particular pages of an eBook in a reasonable amount of time, although if the used device only provides low CPU power.
